The Raft of the Medusa Gericault

The hope, anguish, uncertainty are present

What's the story behind this painting?
part
In 1816 a French expedition to Senegal consisting of four ships. One was a frigate, the Medusa, which a few weeks of sail, runs aground on a reef. The crew, given the lack of boats, built a raft being towed by the same percent to transport fifty people. But soon the raft is abandoned and sinks to his fate for two weeks. What happened in that time, it is known by only two survivors from the raft of the Medusa, who published a chilling account of the struggle for survival, marked by the death of the weak against the bleakness of the situation, the despair reflected in fights and riots raised among men, cannibalism caused by hunger. Only fifteen people were rescued alive, of whom only two lived to tell. Monsieur Géricault met and questioned these people. Studied very well the scene with a model of the raft and worked until he completed his masterpiece.
